The limited series will premiere on November 19, with Anthony Boyle playing Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner portraying Ellison. Netflix describes the pair as ambitious young idealists whose attempt to reshape the financial system ultimately produced an $8 billion fraud.
The production is a dramatized series rather than a documentary. It is inspired by reporting from New York Magazine and focuses heavily on the personal relationship between Bankman-Fried and Ellison alongside the financial decisions that brought down FTX and Alameda Research.
What Does the Netflix Series Focus On?
The trailer frames the FTX story around risk-taking, effective altruism and the gradual erosion of ethical limits inside the companies.
One recurring idea is that repeatedly “going all-in” can be mathematically optimal, reflecting the high-risk trading culture surrounding Alameda. Another scene has Garner’s Ellison say that lying can be acceptable for a good cause, echoing testimony from Bankman-Fried’s criminal trial about his interpretation of effective altruism.
Netflix says the series follows two young idealists who initially wanted to maximize their positive impact before increasingly serious decisions led to criminal conduct. The creative team has said it wanted to portray Bankman-Fried and Ellison as complicated individuals rather than simply reproduce their public appearances.
The underlying events, however, are no longer allegations against Bankman-Fried. A federal jury convicted him on seven fraud and conspiracy counts in November 2023, and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024.
Investor Takeaway
The drama may revive FTX’s personalities, but the investor lesson remains structural: customer assets depended on controls that failed when Alameda received extraordinary access to exchange funds.
What Actually Happened to FTX Customer Funds?
Prosecutors proved at trial that Bankman-Fried directed billions of dollars of FTX customer deposits to Alameda, which used the money for investments, loan repayments, political contributions and other spending.
FTX had told customers that their deposits were safe and separated from company assets. Evidence presented at trial showed that Alameda instead had special privileges embedded in FTX’s systems, including the ability to withdraw effectively unlimited amounts from the exchange.
The distinction matters because FTX’s failure was not simply the result of bad trading or a sudden liquidity crisis. Customer money that users believed remained available for withdrawal had been redirected elsewhere, turning a loss of confidence into an insolvency and bankruptcy event.
Since then, the bankruptcy estate has recovered billions of dollars. The FTX Recovery Trust began a fifth distribution of roughly $900 million in July, taking cumulative creditor distributions to around $10 billion.
Where Are Bankman-Fried and Ellison Now?
Ellison pleaded guilty and became one of the prosecution’s most important witnesses, providing detailed testimony about Alameda’s finances and Bankman-Fried’s role in decisions involving customer funds. She was sentenced to two years in prison and has since been released from federal custody.
Bankman-Fried chose to stand trial. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit rejected his challenge to the conviction in June and later issued its mandate leaving both the 25-year sentence and $11 billion forfeiture order intact. His failed appeals-court challenge has now moved to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A petition for a writ of certiorari was filed on September 10 and docketed five days later. The government’s response is currently due October 15. A separate federal clemency case filed by Bankman-Fried in 2026 also remains listed as pending.
Investor Takeaway
FTX creditors have recovered substantial cash, but later bankruptcy repayments do not erase the original custody failure or the opportunity cost suffered by customers locked out of their crypto.
Why Does the FTX Story Still Matter for Crypto?
Netflix is packaging the collapse as a story about ambition, relationships and ideology, but the financial significance of FTX extends well beyond its former executives.
The exchange became a case study in what can happen when customer custody, proprietary trading and corporate governance are concentrated inside closely connected entities with weak controls. Those questions remain relevant as centralized exchanges compete on proof-of-reserves disclosures, segregation of client assets and regulatory licensing.
The timing also means viewers will encounter the FTX story after much of the bankruptcy recovery has occurred but while Bankman-Fried is still pursuing legal routes to challenge his conviction. That gives The Altruists an unusual backdrop: the criminal verdict is settled at the trial and appellate levels, creditors are receiving billions of dollars, yet the legal and cultural afterlife of the exchange’s collapse is still unfolding.
