The Nasdaq Composite Index closed Friday, October 16, at 26,140.03, down 2.14% on the day and approximately 4.5% for the week, its steepest weekly decline since June. The selling extended a week-long retreat in technology stocks as investors questioned debt-funded artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, semiconductor valuations and the inflationary consequences of oil approaching $110 a barrel.
The S&P 500 fell 1.09% on Friday to 7,659.44, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34% to 52,002.41. Across the full week, however, the Dow gained approximately 0.7%, compared with losses of 1.9% for the S&P 500 and 4.5% for the Nasdaq.
That divergence matters. The selloff was concentrated in technology and other growth-sensitive companies rather than representing an equally severe retreat across every part of the stock market.
The next test arrives during the week of October 19, when Netflix, Tesla and Meta Platforms release quarterly earnings. Investors will be looking for evidence that corporate profits and cash generation can support valuations increasingly challenged by higher financing costs.
Nasdaq Falls 4.5% as All 30 Semiconductor Stocks Decline
Friday’s semiconductor losses illustrated how broadly selling pressure had spread across the technology sector.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.83% to 11,137.29, with all 30 constituents finishing lower. Reuters reported that the index had declined for eight consecutive sessions, its longest losing streak since October 2008.
Advanced Micro Devices fell 5.95%, Intel lost 5.79%, Micron Technology declined 5.63% and Arm Holdings dropped 6.94%. The weakness extended beyond chipmakers into software companies, cloud infrastructure providers and data storage businesses.
The eight-session decline suggests investors were reassessing the broader semiconductor trade rather than reacting to a single disappointing earnings announcement.
Concerns included the sustainability of AI infrastructure demand, competition from Chinese technology suppliers and whether the largest customers could continue financing expensive computing investments at the expected pace.
The distinction between orders and profitable deployment has become increasingly important. Strong chip demand can support semiconductor revenue, but customers still need to finance, install and operate the infrastructure before generating sufficient returns.
CoreWeave’s Credit Troubles Put AI Debt Under Scrutiny
CoreWeave became one of the clearest examples of the changing market assessment of AI financing risk.
The AI cloud infrastructure provider fell 11.91% on Friday to $61.39, taking its weekly decline to 25.21%, according to TradingKey.
The pressure began in credit markets, where the company’s unsecured bonds had already fallen sharply. Its 9.625% notes maturing in 2032 traded at approximately 14% yields on Friday, compared with around 9% during the summer.
Reuters reported that yields on another CoreWeave bond issue had exceeded 16%, reflecting substantially higher compensation demanded by lenders.
Five-year credit default swap spreads reached approximately 1,117 basis points, according to TradingKey. Those spreads indicate substantial concern about credit risk, although they do not establish that a default will occur.
FinanceFeeds previously examined how CoreWeave’s bond selloff preceded the collapse in its shares, including the disconnect between strong adjusted operating metrics and the financing costs required to sustain its infrastructure expansion.
TradingKey cited CNBC reporting that put CoreWeave’s broader debt burden above $51 billion. Other reporting identified approximately $35.6 billion of borrowings alongside substantial lease obligations. The figures reflect different liability definitions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
The larger market concern is whether the debt-financed AI expansion model can produce enough cash flow to service borrowing costs while funding further investment.
That question extends beyond CoreWeave. FinanceFeeds has also examined the gap between Oracle’s massive contracted backlog and the discounted prices of loans supporting its data-center expansion.
Investors are increasingly distinguishing between companies generating cash from AI products and those borrowing heavily against expectations of future demand.
Oil Near $110 and Rising Volatility Complicate the Outlook
The technology selloff coincided with renewed inflation concerns after Brent crude futures settled Friday at $109.86 a barrel, up 3.7% and their highest closing level since May 19.
Oil prices rose amid concerns about Middle Eastern supply disruptions and attacks affecting Russian energy infrastructure, according to Reuters.
Higher oil prices create another challenge for growth stocks. Sustained energy inflation can limit the Federal Reserve’s flexibility, support higher interest rates and increase the cost of financing long-duration investments such as AI data centers.
Market anxiety was also visible in the Cboe Volatility Index. The VIX finished Friday at 19.99, up 21.45% from Thursday’s 16.46 close, according to Cboe data.
The bond market delivered a more nuanced signal.
The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield ended the week near 5.10%, having declined despite stronger-than-expected inflation readings. Investors were buying government debt even as the credit risk associated with leveraged AI infrastructure companies increased.
That distinction is important. Falling Treasury yields can indicate demand for relatively safer assets, while rising corporate credit spreads show that lenders are demanding additional compensation from riskier borrowers.
The combination suggests that investors are not simply abandoning bonds because of inflation. They are becoming more selective about which borrowers can withstand elevated financing costs.
Netflix Reports Tuesday, Tesla and Meta Follow Wednesday
The week beginning October 19 brings several earnings announcements that could influence the direction of technology stocks and the Nasdaq index.
Netflix will release its third-quarter results on Tuesday, October 20, at approximately 4:01 p.m. Eastern time, followed by a management interview at 4:45 p.m.
The streaming company’s results will provide evidence of consumer demand, advertising revenue development and profitability. Investors will also assess management’s outlook following recent reports of restructuring and workforce reductions.
Tesla reports after the market closes on Wednesday, October 21, with its earnings webcast scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
The company has already disclosed third-quarter deliveries of 486,532 vehicles, exceeding analyst consensus but remaining below the corresponding period in 2025.
As FinanceFeeds explained following Tesla’s delivery announcement, the next test is whether vehicle sales translated into stronger margins and cash generation.
Investors will also examine Tesla’s energy storage profitability, autonomous-driving spending and capital expenditure plans.
Meta Platforms will release its third-quarter results after Wednesday’s close, followed by a conference call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
For the wider AI trade, Meta may provide the most directly relevant earnings commentary of the three companies.
Investors will be examining advertising growth, AI-related operating expenses, capital expenditure guidance and whether the company’s AI investments are producing measurable improvements in revenue and profitability.
Strong operating results accompanied by disciplined spending guidance could help reassure investors that AI infrastructure investment is commercially sustainable. Conversely, higher spending projections without convincing evidence of returns could reinforce the concerns driving the latest selloff.
What Could Reverse the Nasdaq Index Selloff Next Week?
The immediate question is whether Friday’s decline represents a temporary repricing of technology valuations or the beginning of a more prolonged reassessment of the AI investment cycle.
Three measurable developments could help answer it.
First, semiconductor stocks need to stabilize. After eight consecutive declines in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, an improvement in market breadth would provide stronger evidence of recovering demand for technology shares than gains concentrated in one or two companies.
Second, AI credit markets need to stop deteriorating. Stabilizing CoreWeave bond prices and credit default swap spreads would suggest investors are becoming more comfortable with the sector’s financing risks.
Third, earnings guidance must support the capital expenditure assumptions underlying technology valuations. Investors will be looking beyond headline revenue growth toward free cash flow, margins and the timing of returns on infrastructure spending.
Oil prices and Treasury yields remain additional variables. Another energy-price surge could revive inflation concerns even if technology companies report satisfactory results.
The Nasdaq enters the new week down approximately 4.5%, while remaining up about 12.5% for 2026. That leaves room for either a recovery or further losses, depending on whether earnings and credit conditions improve.
Netflix begins the earnings test Tuesday, followed by Tesla and Meta on Wednesday. For investors, the decisive question is no longer simply how much companies intend to spend on AI, but whether those investments can generate sufficient returns to justify their valuations and financing costs.
