Fundstrat co-founder and BitMine chairman Tom Lee has predicted that Ethereum could surpass $5,000 before the end of 2026, outlining an optimistic outlook for the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency despite its recent price weakness.
Lee discussed the forecast in an interview with Ondo Finance recorded during TOKEN2049 in Singapore and released on October 8. He also suggested that Ethereum could reach approximately $7,500 if Bitcoin climbed to $100,000.
Ethereum was trading around $2,560 on October 12, meaning it would need to appreciate approximately 95% to reach Lee’s $5,000 target before December 31.
The forecast comes amid considerable market uncertainty. Ethereum fell from approximately $2,710 on October 5 to $2,474 on October 8 before recovering modestly, reflecting broader weakness across digital assets.
Lee’s prediction would also take Ethereum above its August 2025 record of approximately $4,954, establishing a new all-time high.
Lee Links Ethereum’s Potential Rally to Institutional Adoption
Lee’s optimistic outlook centers on the increasing adoption of blockchain infrastructure by traditional financial institutions, particularly through tokenized securities, stablecoins and blockchain-based settlement systems.
During the interview, he argued that tokenization represents a substantial growth opportunity because only a relatively small portion of traditional financial assets currently operates on blockchain networks.
He suggested Ethereum could eventually reach between $25,000 and $50,000 during the broader market cycle, although he did not assign that range a specific year-end deadline.
His $7,500 scenario, meanwhile, remains conditional on Bitcoin advancing to $100,000. The latest projection follows more ambitious comments made in September, when Lee discussed Ethereum potentially trading above $10,000 within 12 months.
Although the new $5,000 year-end forecast is considerably lower, the earlier statements involved different time horizons and should not necessarily be interpreted as a formal reduction in his longer-term expectations.
Lee has consistently argued that increasing institutional participation could strengthen Ethereum’s investment appeal as financial infrastructure gradually moves onto blockchain networks.
However, institutional adoption does not automatically translate into higher ETH prices, and the relationship between network activity, transaction fees and token valuations remains an important consideration.
BitMine’s $16 Billion Ethereum Treasury Reinforces Lee’s Bullish Position
Lee’s outlook also carries significance because of his leadership role at BitMine Immersion Technologies, one of the largest corporate holders of Ethereum.
According to an October 5 company announcement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, BitMine held 6,016,414 ETH as of October 4, representing approximately 4.9% of the reported 122.1 million ETH supply.
The holdings were valued at approximately $16.4 billion using Ethereum’s $2,726 reference price, while BitMine’s combined cryptocurrency, cash and other investments totaled approximately $17.4 billion.
The company also reported staking 5.07 million ETH, demonstrating its strategy of generating yield while maintaining substantial long-term exposure to the cryptocurrency. BitMine’s concentration in Ethereum gives Lee a significant commercial interest in the asset’s performance, an important consideration when evaluating his forecasts.
For Ethereum to approach $5,000 before year-end, market conditions would likely need to improve substantially, supported by stronger cryptocurrency demand, institutional investment and favorable macroeconomic developments.
Rising Treasury yields, a stronger dollar and persistent volatility remain potential obstacles. While Lee’s projection highlights confidence in Ethereum’s longer-term adoption, the scale of the required rally underscores the uncertainty surrounding its near-term price trajectory.
